KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (TCN) —Â After her elderly bedbound father was found with pressure sores so extensive that bones were visible, a woman was charged with aggravated neglect.
According to a general sessions docket obtained by WATE, a 74-year-old man was transported to the hospital on Jan. 2, where staff found that his blood sugar was more than 600 and that he had pressure sores so extensive that muscle was exposed and three of his vertebrae were visible.
The man, who has not been named, had had a stroke eight years prior and became bedbound approximately six months ago.Â
WATE reports law enforcement became involved on Jan. 13 after the case was referred from adult protective services. The investigation found the man’s caregiver, his daughter Misty McDaniel, 43, had not taken him to the doctor for wound or diabetes treatment in six months.
She allegedly had not given his medication daily or checked his blood sugar, although a supply of his medication was found in her bedroom. McDaniel and her husband had reportedly been the man’s caregivers since 2018.Â
McDaniel was arrested and charged with aggravated neglect of an elderly or vulnerable adult resulting in serious bodily injury. WATE reports the victim was admitted to the critical care unit. He has undergone numerous surgeries and procedures to treat his wounds.
Law & Crime reports McDaniel was taken into custody and her bond was set at $75,000.
