A South Carolina woman stands accused of killing her ex-husband and stuffing him in the closet.
Joyanna Black Vansant is facing charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. The Horry County Coroner identified the victim as 60-year-old Frederick Vansant, Jr., according to local media outlets.
The suspect allegedly opened the door covered in blood when cops were conducting a welfare check on her ex-husband’s home.
Officers from the Horry County Police Department entered the home for a protective sweep and found the ex-husband’s body stuffed in a closet with apparent gunshot wounds, the agency wrote in a press release.
Cops took Joyanna Vansant into custody and brought her to the J. Reuben Long Detention Center. Police said the suspect no longer lived in the home. A motive has yet to be released. The probable cause arrest affidavit was not immediately available.
Records from the South Carolina Department of Social Services show the Vansants divorced in 2021.
Local ABC affiliate WPDE spoke with a neighbor who knew the victim well.
“We know that he loved to golf, and we know he had a group of friends he would go golfing with,” Lauren Wehrung told the TV station. “We actually had a nickname for him, we would nickname him ‘Friendrick’ like friend, because he was legitimately so friendly and he was the kind of guy that if you needed something, he would definitely come through.”
A judge on Sunday denied the defendant bond, the Sun News reported. If convicted, she faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.
