World Cup Fans Left Baffled As Ecuador Denied Netherlands Leveller With A Controversial call

Exploring ‘World Cup Fans Left Baffled As Ecuador Denied Netherlands Leveller With A Controversial call’ World Cup fans have been left fuming over another controversial call by the officials after Ecuador was denied an equaliser against the Netherlands in their Group A fixture on Friday. The South American nation thought they had found a leveller when Pervis Estupinan’s strike was deflected into the net, only for the offside flag to be raised against the Brighton full-back, and the on-field decision was not overturned after a VAR check.

Ecuador was piling on the pressure after going behind to an early Cody Gakpo goal for the Netherlands and, as the corner was delivered, it came out to Estupinan, who was waiting on the edge of the box.

The Brighton man fired in a speculative low effort through a crowd of players, hoping for a lucky deflection or to see it nestle into the bottom corner. Instead, it took a wicked deflection to wrong-foot the goalkeeper Andries Noppert and roll into the net to send the Ecuador supporters into pandemonium.

Their celebrations were cut short, however, when the assistant referee raised the offside flag against Jackson Porozo, who was standing in an offside position when Estupinan struck the ball. VAR officials checked the incident and the on-field decision from the man in the middle, Mustapha Ghorbal, stood as Ecuador was left in despair.

And fans took to social media to register their confusion with a decision that went against Ecuador, given that Porozo did not actually touch the ball or supposedly interfere with play.

Twitter user @kilrwat said: “Ecuador was ROBBED! The offside rule needs revision.”

@jballew_horns26 agreed and said: “I think Ecuador got hosed on that call. I get the interference rule in an offside position, but he did nothing that influenced what the keeper could or could not do.”

@AadityaN_28 said: “The Ecuador player was literally stood right in front of the ‘keeper and moved away from the path of the ball = directly interfering with play. Very very good offside call.”

A pained @deezyisback agreed, writing: “As much as I wanna say Ecuador got played, it was offside.”

Ecuador would later feel some joy, and deservedly, so after Enner Valencia stabbed home from close range to make it 1-1, leaving Group A wide open with one game to go.
