Jamal Musiala began the counter after Germany had robbed Costa Rica of possession, before playing the ball down the left for David Raum who provided the cross for the Bayern Munich star to head home.

Musiala played a big part in the goal and has been one of the players of the tournament, even forcing Liverpool icon Graeme Souness to praise the teenager. “He’s a different player but he’s going to be a star,” Souness said prior to kick-off. “He’ll have a great education in Germany, he appears to have everything. He can dribble and knows when to run at the right time. There’s enough to like about the young man.”

While fellow pundit Gary Neville had been impressed with Musiala’s compatriot Leroy Sane during the winger’s time with Manchester City. “I thought Sane had a bit of an ordeal at City,” Neville added. “Pep [Guardiola], for some reason never got on with him or fancied him – I loved him. From a right-back perspective, how he would attack players, pace, directness and he caused Spain enough problems in the last 20 to keep his place.”
