The Rookie’s ninth season is still months away — scheduled to premiere on Wednesday, January 6, 2027, immediately before the debut of spinoff The Rookie: North — so we’re biding our time by revisiting the ABC police drama’s most-watched episodes.
The top 10 episodes in total viewership — according to ratings figures from TV Series Finale — include a pivotal Season 1 episode, much of Season 2’s back half, and a couple of Season 5 standouts.
Coincidentally or not, many of these episodes feature milestones in the #Chenford ship, like the relationship between Lucy Chen (Melissa O’Neil) and Tim Bradford (Eric Winter).
Without further ado, here are the episodes unlikely to get lost on The Rookie’s blotter.
10. 5×14: “Death Sentence” — 4.772 million viewers
Midway through Season 5, Tim is starting his Metro job, Bailey Nune (Jenna Dewan) is nearly taken out in a first-responder killing spree, and Wesley Evers (Shawn Ashmore) grows suspicious of a judge who then dies under mysterious circumstances. In another twist, John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) lives to regret ignoring calls about his mother when he finds out she has died.
9. 5×12: “Death Notice” — 4.777 million viewers
Two episodes earlier came another highly-watched installment, one in which Celina Juarez (Lisseth Chavez) and John struggle to protect repeat criminal Oscar Hutchinson (Matthew Glave) from threats to his life as he readies to donate a kidney to his daughter. Meanwhile, Bradford and Chen have a steamy makeout sesh. Oh, and Kelly Clarkson cameos as herself.
8. 2×11: “Day of Death” — 4.923 million viewers
The Chenford pairing had another big episode two seasons prior as Tim and the rest of the Mid-Wilshire team rush to locate a kidnapped Lucy — on her prescribed “day of death” — before it’s too late. Meanwhile, Angela Lopez (Alyssa Diaz) confronts Wesley about his substance use after finding him unconscious.
7. 2×18: “Under the Gun” — 4.959 million viewers
Nyla Harper (Mekia Cox) and John have to team up with Oscar Hutchinson — in that character’s third-ever appearance on the show — when they become trapped in a prison riot. Elsewhere, Jackson West (Titus Makin Jr.) and Angela handle an active shooter situation at the office of the same tech bro whose algorithm seemingly flagged Angela as a problematic officer.
6. 2×19: “The Q Word” — 4.995 million viewers
It seems Nyla is right to scold John for uttering the dreaded “Q word” in the episode, after he remarks that he’d never “had a shift this quiet.” By the end of the hour, two rookie officers are dead, and Detective Nick Armstrong (Harold Perrineau) is exposed as the LAPD mole working for the criminal Derian family.
5. 2×13: “Follow-Up Day” — 5.124 million viewers
When John learns that his estranged father has died, he also learns he has a scofflaw of a half-brother, played by Pete Davidson. Also, the cops track down a lotto ticket thief, played by Russell Sams (who revealed on YouTube he was tackled by an onlooker who didn’t realize he was only an actor). Plus, Tim puts off his sergeant promotion to finish training Lucy.
4. 2×14: “Casualties” — 5.169 million viewers
In the very next episode, Wade Grey (Richard T. Jones) deduces that a peeping tom case is the reason a bullet fell from the sky and lodged in a man’s skull. Elsewhere, Tim and Lucy investigate an Afghanistan war veteran’s murder, which leads to a Defense Intelligence Agency operation involving counterfeit money.
3. 2×15: “Hand-Off” — 5.183 million viewers
The Rookie’s Season 2 ratings wins continued a week later as Seth Green guest-starred on the show, playing a financial advisor who steals John’s identity and money. As that’s going on, Wade argues for his former partner’s killer to be paroled, and Jackson happens to solve a homicide during routine code-compliance work.
2. 1×01: “Pilot” — 5.426 million viewers
In The Rookie’s first-ever episode, John has a midlife career change and becomes a rookie cop with the LAPD’s Mid-Wilshire Division — much to a skeptical Wade’s dismay — and gets partnered with training officer Talia Bishop (Afton Williamson). John’s fellow rookies include Jackson and Lucy, the latter of whom is secretly dating him.
1. 2×16: “The Overnight” — 5.867 million viewers
The Rookie’s most-watched episode yet has John getting held captive, Wesley proposing to Angela, and Tim and Lucy responding to a call at the American Idol auditions. The lattermost plot point leads to Lucy singing before Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan — in some ABC cross-promotion and a nod to O’Neil’s own Canadian Idol roots.
