A Minnesota boy is in the hospital after being shot in the head, leading police to arrest two people, including a 13-year-old girl, KARE11 reports.
The incident occurred on Friday, when St. Paul Police Department officers were dispatched around 9 p.m. to a report of someone who had been shot.
Officers reportedly found an 11-year-old boy with a life-threatening gunshot wound to his head. Medics also responded and rushed the victim to Gillette Children’s Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Upon investigation, police learned that the 13-year-old girl may have been involved and located her after a search. She was arrested and was expected to be detained in the Ramsey County Juvenile Detention Center for suspicion of second-degree assault.
Two handguns were found at an apartment in the same vicinity of where the boy was found shot. Police there arrested a 34-year-old man on suspicion of felony possession of a firearm and misdemeanor negligent firearm storage, according to Fox 9.
A woman in the apartment building told KARE11 that she held the victim before first responders arrived.
“I just told him to hold on,” Lisa Wheeler told the television station. “And the police came and they took over.”
Reflecting on her experience in helping the child, Wheeler urged parents to take accountability.
“I just want people to watch their kids, pay attention to them. If they’re acting out and acting violent, check their backpacks. Watch your kids, take care of them,” Wheeler told WCCO-TV.
