CAPE MAY COUNTY, N.J. (TCN) — A 36-year-old former teacher will spend five years behind bars and forfeit her teaching license after pleading guilty in connection with the sexual abuse of a former student who lived in her home.
Laura Caron was indicted by a grand jury in June 2025 on charges of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, second-degree sexual assault, and second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, according to the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office.
People reported at the time of her indictment that a probable cause affidavit alleged Caron had a daughter with the victim in 2019. Her victim was 13 years old at the time of the child’s birth, and Caron was 27. Court TV reports their sexual relationship began when the student was 11.
The victim had begun living with Caron in 2016 for unknown reasons, according to the probable cause affidavit obtained by People. Caron had met him when he was a student in her fifth grade classroom. Court TV reports that in 2024, the victim’s father posted on social media that Caron’s child looked like his son. The superintendent flagged the post and the investigation began.
Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland stated, “These allegations are deeply disturbing, particularly given the position of trust the defendant held in relation to the victim.” Court TV reports the victim said Caron abused him 416 times.
According to the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, Caron pleaded guilty on Oct. 28 to second-degree endangering the welfare of a child with sexual conduct. She will spend five years in prison and must forfeit her teaching license. After her release, she will be required to register on the Megan’s Law Offender Registry and will be subject to parole supervision for the rest of her life.
Caron is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 8, 2027, per the county prosecutor’s office.
