The Real Housewives of Orange County cast member took to her Instagram Story on Sept. 17, where she posted a black-and-white selfie of herself in a hospital bed alongside Matt, who wore a hospital gown. She then took to the caption of the post, where she detailed the moments that led to his hospitalization.
“[Four] days ago, Matt told me he was having a lot of pain in his side. He went to urgent care and was immediately sent to the ER,” she wrote. “They discovered blood clots in his lung and legs. So much pain, tests, and long nights in the hospital. It’s been scary, but we’re beyond grateful for the incredible care at [Hoag]. He’s home now and on the way to recovery.”

Katie spoke with The Daily Dish in August, where she shared a major update on her marriage to Matt, a journalist, storyteller, and founder of Fire Pit Productions. “Still married to the same person. We’re great,” she said.
“Matt’s really busy with work,” she added at the time. “He’s been traveling pretty much for the last eight weeks for work. So he’s pretty busy.”

Katie and Matt share their young son, Bandon Ginella, together. But Katie also has a daughter, Kaili, and two sons, Gavin and Max, from a previous relationship. Katie revealed that Kaili and Matt even did some traveling together this summer.Â
“And Kaili and Matt actually just got back from a father-daughter golf tournament they played together in Ireland,” she noted. “That’s really special.”

Katie appeared on the Two T’s in a Pod podcast on Sept. 4, where she spoke openly about how she and Matt support one another. This support is especially important as Katie has gone through some friend drama, noting that Matt helps her “read people.”
“We do that for each other,” she said. “When people are harsh with him, I’m like, ‘F that guy.’ You know? I think we do that for each other.”

“But no, he always tells me, ‘Katie, you can’t save every animal.’ I am trying,” she added. “I think it goes back to being adopted and wanting to be included…I am a people pleaser, a thousand percent. And it’s why I stayed married to my first husband for so long.”
