A New Jersey man has been charged with the murder of his girlfriend, who’s body was found in an abandoned car in Pennsylvania on Sunday.
Lamont Truitt, 36, has been charged with first degree murder, attempted first degree murder, carjacking, two counts of possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, unlawful possession of a handgun, and persons not to possess a firearm, according to the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.
The saga began just before 6 a.m. that morning when police in Trenton were alerted to gunshots by a ShotSpotter. Simultaneously, 911 calls came in for a woman who had been shot. They responded to the area and found a 25-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to the leg and transported her to a hospital.
At around the same time, another 911 call said that a woman “had been shot multiple times by a man who fled in a silver, four-door vehicle,” the prosecutor’s office said. Investigators were unable to find this victim right away.
Investigators learned that the second victim — identified as 32-year-old Alyssia Murphy — had been in a car with the 25-year-old woman when Murphy’s boyfriend — Truitt — “approached and began arguing with Murphy.”
“He then pulled a handgun and fired multiple times,” the prosecutor’s office said. “The 25-year-old woman was able to exit the vehicle. Truitt then entered the Camry and drove away.”
About two hours later, police across the Delaware River in Pennsylvania found Murphy’s body in the Camry, which had been abandoned near the Delaware Canal in Lower Makefield Township.
At some point, Truitt turned himself in to Trenton Police and was charged with Murphy’s murder.
