After just one charter, deckhand Max Salvador left Below Deck Mediterranean Season 11 amid his dad’s involvement in a dangerous situation in Tunisia.
After explaining what was happening with his estranged father to Captain Sandy Yawn, Max revealed his decision to exit Below Deck Med at the beginning of Episode 13. “I’m just going to go,” he said, before detailing his plan to “extract” his dad from Tunisia by “crossing the desert” into bordering Libya. “For my father, I don’t want to lose time.”
In a confessional, Max elaborated, “My plan is take my father, and I’m going to cross, like, the border on the desert in Libya, rent a boat on the main port where we can take, like, an airplane and go back to France.”
He continued, “I have to do this for my father. I have to do this for me. I believe that I have good karma. And, yeah, let’s test my karma.”

Yes, Max followed through with his decision to leave Below Deck Med Season 11 and to try to rescue his dad from Tunisia, officially exiting Akira One later in Episode 13.

Previously during Episode 12, Max’s dad explained in a “really urgent” phone call that he was “trapped in Tunisia” and in trouble. “He’s in deep s–t,” Max added of his father’s dangerous situation in Africa.

Max shared details about his dad in Episode 12, opening up about how they’d been estranged for more than a decade. “I was a kid that didn’t have, like, a connection with my father,” he shared with a Below Deck Med producer. “When I was 16, my parents divorced. My mother went away, and my father was already finding, like, another woman. And so, I was, like, by myself, 17, no parents, no one at home.”
How Captain Sandy Yawn reacted to Max Salvador’s Below Deck Med departure
Captain Sandy had strongly advised Max against traveling to northern Africa, warning that he could be putting his life at risk. Nevertheless, she told Max, “You are a grown man, and it’s your decision.”
After Max decided to leave, Sandy added, “What you’re doing is raw emotion and reckless. It’s your life. You’re not Rambo. … But if you want to do something like that, know your way to the closest embassy just in case. You have to be smart about it, Max.”

She continued in a confessional, “This is a really big decision. I want Max to consider the dangers he’s about to put himself in. If it was Leah, of course I would go, but I would do it methodically. He’s going blindly. He thinks he’s a superhero.”
Even so, Sandy urged Max to take care of himself and to reach out to her if he was “ever in trouble.”

Prior to officially revealing his decision on Below Deck Med, Max reflected on his conversation with Captain Sandy in the caption of an Aug. 26 Instagram post. “[Captain Sandy] told me it wasn’t the right choice… but I followed my heart and chose to help my father,” Max wrote, in part, adding a red heart emoji.
“Since then, I’ve received so many incredible messages from you guys, and I wanted to find a way to say thank you,” the native of Cannes, France, continued, announcing a “once-in-a-lifetime” yachting experience on the French Riviera as a “thank you” for the viewers’ support. “Life is short and I want you to be able to look back one day and say: ‘Damn… I actually lived that.'”
