HILLSBOROUGH, N.J. (TCN) — A woman has been charged with murder in connection with the deaths of her sons, ages 5 and 7.
The Somerset County Prosecutor announced Priyatharsini Natarajan, 35, has been arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose.
On Jan. 13, officers received a call from a father who had returned home from work and found his two children unconscious. He reportedly told dispatchers his wife had done something to them, according to the prosecutor. Responding officers found the two children, whose names have not been released, deceased in a bedroom. They attempted lifesaving measures, but the children were pronounced dead at the scene.
NJ.com reports multiple ligature materials were found inside the home, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by the outlet. Natarajan allegedly confessed to her husband, and a handwritten note was found at the scene that reportedly said she planned to kill her children and herself. No motive has yet been released in the deaths.
The boys were students at Sunnymead Elementary School, CBS News reports. Hillsborough County Superintendent Mike Volpe said, “There are no words to adequately capture the weight of this tragedy, and our hearts are with the families and the entire Sunnymead community as they grieve.”
Natarajan remains in custody in the Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing, according to the prosecutor. The investigation is ongoing.
