An investigation is underway in Ohio, where five children and a woman were found dead in a house fire on Tuesday.
Firefighters who responded to a blaze in Clarksville found an unresponsive man on the ground floor. Firefighters ultimately accessed the second floor, where discovered the bodies of a woman and four children, according to WCPO.
Crews were briefly prevented from reaching the second floor due to the stairway collapsing. The News Journal reported that one of the four deceased children located on the second floor was an infant.
Earlier reports indicated that there was a fifth child who was unaccounted for. That child was ultimately found deceased, though details were not provided.
Though authorities have not publicly identified the five people found dead on Tuesday, the Clinton Massie Local School District said three of the children were elementary school students.
“This morning, our district became aware of a tragic house fire in our community. Authorities have confirmed the deaths of a mother, three of our students, and an infant. This is devastating news for our school community. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family’s loved ones and all who are impacted,” school officials said in a statement issued to WKEF.
Eight firefighters were injured in Tuesday’s fire, but officials said they were all treated at the scene and released.
The man’s condition was not disclosed. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
