New York man allegedly violated restraining order to break in, kill estranged wife and stab daughter

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. (TCN) — A 57-year-old man has been indicted by a grand jury in connection with the fatal stabbing of his estranged wife.

According to the Suffolk County district attorney, Marcos Aurelio Marques-Leal violated an order of protection when he arrived at the home of Adriana Barbosa, 46, on the evening of Feb. 12, WPIX reports. When he was unable to open a locked side door, he allegedly threw a large planter through a sliding glass door.

Barbosa and her 16-year-old daughter, whose name has not been released, hid in the bedroom, locked the door, and called the police, according to WPIX.

Marques-Leal allegedly gained access to the room and lunged at Barbosa with a knife while the teen attempted to get between them to protect her mother. Marques-Leal allegedly stabbed Barbosa in head, neck, and torso. The 16-year-old suffered defensive wounds on her hands. Marques-Leal then allegedly stabbed himself in the neck and torso.

GreaterLongIsland.com reports all three family members were taken to the hospital and Barbosa was pronounced dead.

On March 2, Marques-Leal pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, first-degree burglary, aggravated criminal contempt, and endangering the welfare of a child, according to GreaterLongIsland.com.

Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney said, “No family should endure such terror, and no child should carry the trauma of seeing a parent killed before their eyes. We will pursue justice with unwavering determination, while keeping the victims at the center of this case.”

If convicted of murder, officials say Marques-Leal could face 25 years in prison. He is being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court again on March 25, according to GreaterLongIsland.com.
