Police in Illinois and Pennsylvania are investigating after a man and two women were found dead hundreds of miles apart in an apparent murder-suicide.

The investigation began the man called Hillside, Illinois, police and said there were two women dead in a home in Jackson Township, Pennsylvania, KDKA reports. By the time the Hillside officers arrived on the scene, the man had shot himself to death.

Hillside police identified the man then requested a welfare check on his home in Jackson Township, Pennsylvania, about 30 miles north of Pittsburgh.

Officers had to force entry into the home and found the two women dead from gunshot wounds.

Police have not publicly identified the victims or their killer, but sources told KDKA the victims were the murderer’s wife and daughter. Hillside Police said only that the three are believed to be related, WTAE reported.

“My first reaction was shocked because this is such a close-knit neighborhood, and to think something that horrible could happen here is very tragic because they were such a good family,” neighbor Danielle Sporer told KDKA.

Pennsylvania State Police is leading the investigation of the murders.
