“I actually had straw in my hair when I went home. It’s just everywhere,” Ruby Fubara told TV Insider with a laugh about shooting the big love scene between her character, maidservant Grace, and Highlander Murtagh Fraser (Rory Alexander) in the seventh episode of Outlander prequel Blood of My Blood. That’s what happens when your secret rendezvous spot is a threshing barn! We spoke with the actors (watch the video above for the full interview) about the couple’s relationship and the tender and passionate moment they shared.
Alexander said that Murtagh and Grace’s first time together was just as it should be: “It’s funny because as an actor you’re like, ‘I want this to be the sexiest thing in the world!’ And then as a character you go, ‘Actually, he’s going to be fumbling around, he’s going to get the giggles, there’s going to be straw in people’s hair.’ I’m actually very glad that that is how it happens because it’s so much more fitting to their relationship and the people that they are that it is kind of innocent and it’s not all about lust. It’s about going through this crazy thing together and enjoying it and laughing at it and just doing it as a pair and not doing it perfectly.”

Ideal as these two outsiders seem to be for each other, executive producer Matthew B. Roberts has told TV Insider that Murtagh’s relationship with Grace will help make him into the more curmudgeonly older version of the character seen in Outlander.
Alexander addresses that: “Well, I guess, you know, love is hard. And whether it goes well or not, it’s a massive experience that kind of writes itself across Murtaugh’s heart. It’s all cumulative. And even what they’ve gone through already — Grace got captured, I went to war, we had to do it in a barn — it’s taking its toll either way. He hasn’t had an easy love life.”
Watch the video above for the full chat with Alexander and Fubara, and come back for more from them after the eighth episode, where the “surprise” mentioned by Grace’s mistress, Jocasta Cameron (Sadhbh Malin), is revealed.
