N.C. woman set on fire during home invasion

ROSEBORO, N.C. (TCN) — A man has been charged with attempted murder and first-degree arson after a woman was set on fire during a home invasion.

On April 11, firefighters and deputies responding to a structure fire found 36-year-old Courtney Witschger with burns covering two-thirds of her body, according to The Associated Press. She told authorities a man had forcibly entered her home, poured gasoline on her, and set her on fire before leaving on a bicycle. She identified him by name and a manhunt ensued.

On April 13, 29-year-old Franklin Faircloth was arrested in connection with the alleged attack. According to an arrest warrant, he was dating the victim, according to WRAL. He was found in the woods behind a home and was charged with first-degree arson, attempted murder, first-degree burglary, assault with serious bodily injury, and a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.

WDTV reports Witschger’s family shared a statement that reads, “We are deeply grateful for the overwhelming support. At this time, we humbly ask for privacy. We understand the curiosity around this situation. However, this is real life for us and a very traumatic event. We need time to heal and nurture our family. What we will say is please continue to pray for her and our family.”

Faircloth is believed to be homeless, per WXII. WRAL reports he is being held without bond and is scheduled to appear in court on April 16.

The investigation is ongoing.
