SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (TCN) — A 56-year-old man is behind bars after he allegedly tortured and sexually assaulted his girlfriend for seven hours before fatally strangling her.
On April 30, a friend of 43-year-old nurse Katherine Torbick called the police and requested a welfare check because they were concerned that they had not heard from her that day, WGN-TV reports. When officers arrived, they found Torbick’s body on a couch. She reportedly appeared to have been there for some time and had signs of trauma. Police found and apprehended her boyfriend, 56-year-old Kevin Motykie, in the garage. He had allegedly taken lorazepam and hydrocodone and was having trouble speaking and standing.
According to WGN-TV, Motykie was accused of strangling and attacking Torbick in March and had been wanted on a warrant in connection with that alleged attack before Torbick’s body was found.
Following the March incident, Torbick had run to a neighbor’s home to call for help and authorities responding to the incident made note of her injuries and a letter she had allegedly been forced to write by Motykie. WFLD reports the letter was a suicide note for her 12-year-old son, which she was allegedly given 20 minutes to write.
Prior to her death, Torbick made a videotaped statement for police stating she was afraid Motykie would kill her, CBS News reports. He was never taken into custody.
Court documents obtained by WGN-TV allege Motykie he had a digital recording device on his person when he was apprehended. On a seven-hour recording on the device, Motykie can be heard allegedly sexually assaulting, beating, and binding Torbick with duct tape, all while interrogating her about whether she had cheated on him.
According to WFLD, Motykie can be heard on the recording allegedly telling Torbick to perform oral sex on him, but that if she bit him, he would stab her in the head. He can also be heard allegedly telling her that her 12-year-old son would be better off without her.
The final few minutes of the recording allegedly captured Torbick being strangled to death. Before allegedly killing her, Motkyie can be heard saying, “This will take 30 seconds, think of somewhere happy.”
WGN-TV reports Motykie has a history of stalking and domestic violence and has had multiple orders of protection taken out on him. In addition, his plastic surgeon brother accused him of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from his business during the pandemic.
CBS News reports Torbick and Motykie had been in an on-again, off-again relationship for about a decade and had lived together. Following the alleged attack in March, Torbick started dating someone else in April.
According to WGN-TV, Torbick was a mother and had worked as a nurse for 21 years. In a social media statement, her workplace, Fox River MedSpa, said, “We are heartbroken by the loss of our teammate and friend, Kat Torbick. In the short time she was with us, she became a part of our sisterhood. She brought warmth, energy, and genuine care to our workplace. She loved being part of this team, and we loved having her here.”
Motykie was charged with Torbick’s murder as well as three counts of criminal sexual assault on May 1. According to CBS News, he is being held until his next scheduled court date of May 23.
The investigation is ongoing.
