Teenage girl heard voices before allegedly killing mom with a hammer

MAPLEWOOD, Minn. (TCN) — A 17-year-old girl has been charged with second-degree murder after police allege she beat her mother to death with a hammer. Prosecutors plan to charge her as an adult.

KSTP reports that officers conducting a welfare check at a residence on June 26 found the body of 43-year-old Georgina Lee Monk. She had suffered blunt force trauma, and an autopsy determined that her death was a homicide caused by multiple injuries due to assault. KARE reports Monk was a wheelchair user.

Monk’s 17-year-old daughter, whose name has not been released, was identified as the suspect in Monk’s death, and she was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Prosecutors plan to charge her as an adult, per KTSP.

According to charging documents obtained by KTSP, the girl allegedly admitted she struck her mother with a hammer. She allegedly asked an investigator, “Am I a criminal because I only killed one person?”

AOL reports she told interviewers she heard voices before the killing that said, “Get rid of anybody who hurt you in your life or anybody who dared to hurt you.” She reportedly attended a day treatment center and told staff to check on her mother because she felt regret.

KARE reports that neighbors often heard the girl and Monk arguing, but on the day of Monk’s death, the argument was “more heated than usual.” The neighbor alleged Monk had taken away the teen’s phone.
