A man in Kentucky is accused of drunkenly crashing into a woman crossing the street — and then continuing to drive until he collided with a vehicle.
Anthony Billingslea, 39, faces charges including vehicular homicide when under the influence of alcohol, first-degree wanton endangerment, tampering with physical evidence, leaving the scene of an accident with a failure to render aid or assistance, and operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol. According to court records reviewed by Law&Crime, he was booked into the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections on Monday.
The victim was identified in court documents reviewed by local Fox affiliate WDRB as Carolyn Lindsey.
On Sunday at about 4:30 a.m., Billingslea was allegedly driving in the area of the 2700 block of 7th Street Road in Louisville, Kentucky. A party was going on nearby, and a man had called police to complain about people appearing to have parked illegally.
According to the caller, officers were looking at the vehicle identification numbers of the cars when Lindsey was crossing the street with her friends. Suddenly, “a car came by going like 70 or 80 miles per hour and hit her,” the caller told the TV station.
The witness believed she may have been leaving the party. Emergency workers showed up and pronounced her dead.
After reportedly striking the woman, Billingslea kept driving at a “high rate of speed,” authorities said, alleging that he then rear-ended a vehicle with three people inside, though police made no mention of them being hurt. The defendant apparently kept driving again.
Billingslea allegedly left the vehicle at an apartment complex and ran away. Police showed up at the initial crash site and investigated what happened.
A witness told officers they were with the defendant the previous night and saw him “actively consuming alcohol.” This witness added that Billingslea was “highly intoxicated all throughout the night,” per WDRB.
Billingslea was arrested and arraigned on Monday. He pleaded not guilty and was ordered held on $500,000 bond.
