A 52-year-old Florida man will spend the rest of his days behind bars after he killed his “best friend” when he shoved him onto a dock — knocking him unconscious and causing a serious head injury — before pushing the victim into the water.

Kamal Padlowski was sentenced to life in prison Monday after a jury convicted him last month of first-degree murder in the death of Melvin Jimenez in Ruskin, which is near Tampa, records say.

Surveillance video captured the incident as it unfolded.

“From the moment I first saw the video, I just couldn’t even believe it was real, what I was watching,” Judge Michelle Sisco said during sentencing, according to a courtroom report from local Fox affiliate WTVT. “I couldn’t believe there’d be such a lack of sympathy for another human being.”

Sisco scolded Padlowski for the way he treated Jimenez and said he could have avoided charges if he had simply called for help after the victim hit his head.

“Melvin Jimenez had value,” Sisco said, per local NBC affiliate WFLA. “His life had value. People loved him. He contributed to society and now he’s gone for the most senseless act.”

Jimenez’s daughter Kim Springer addressed the court.

“Mel was my dad, because he showed up for me every day,” Springer said. “He chose us and we chose him. He became the first man I ever trusted completely. He became my safe space, my protector and the person who taught me that not everyone would hurt me.”

At trial, a witness who walked past Padlowski on the dock after the incident testified about what the defendant told her, WFLA reported.

“‘I think I just killed my best friend,'” the witness recalled Padlowski saying.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Padlowski and Jimenez were drinking on May 25, 2024, at a nearby restaurant when the suspect invited the victim back to his sailboat, which was named “All That Jazz.” But once they were out on the sailboat, the night turned violent when Jimenez allegedly made a rude remark toward Padlowski’s girlfriend.

Cops arrived at the scene and recovered Jimenez’s body before taking the suspect into custody.

In an interview after receiving his Miranda rights, Padlowski claimed he kicked Jimenez off the boat and never saw him again.

But the video from the docks showed otherwise.

It depicted Jimenez walking off the boat and onto the dock. He was putting on his sandals when Padlowski approached the victim in an “aggressive manner,” the affidavit said. Padlowski shoved Jimenez, who fell and hit his head on the dock. Padlowski then grabbed the victim by the ankles and pushed him in the water.

“The victim appears motionless and sinks under the surface of the water,” cops wrote.

Padlowski threw Jimenez’s sandals in the water as well.
