Olivia Rodrigo drops surprise new song inspired by The Handmaid’s Tale

The 23-year-old pop star, fresh off the release of her third album, debuted a new track called Serena Joy on Friday.

The drop was very limited, though, as Variety reports that it was pressed onto just 500 CDs that went on sale at Analog Music Shop. Unsurprisingly, they sold out by the end of the day.

Thankfully, fans who didn’t get their hands on a copy won’t be out of luck for long: Analog Music Shop said that Olivia plans to release the track officially on Monday.

The song’s title is an apparent nod to Margaret Atwood’s book-turned-TV-show The Handmaid’s Tale, set in a near-future dystopian America where women are oppressed in a patriarchal society that forces some – called handmaids – to bear children for powerful men.

Serena Joy, the wife of one of these high-status men, had been a prominent advocate for the patriarchal regime, but soon finds that she, too, has lost her voice in the world she helped create.

“If they do it to them / They’ll do it to you / If they do it to them / They’re gonna do it to you,” Olivia sings in the new track.

Olivia has consistently used her platform to advocate for feminism and reproductive freedom. The song’s release comes ahead of her Daisy Chain Fields music festival – an all-female event that will donate its net profits to organizations fighting for women and girls.
