Deputies with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office responded on Sept. 1 to a home in the 17900 block of Valley Knoll Drive for a welfare check. Family members said they had not heard from Sorto De Malik for several days and she was not answering phone calls or texts, a probable cause arrest affidavit said.
The victim lived at the home with Malik. Deputies forced their way into the home and found Malik sleeping in a bedroom. He was taken into custody. Cops then went to a bedroom across the hall where they smelled an “odor consistent with a decaying or decomposing body.” They saw sheets in the middle of the room with suspected blood on it.
Officers lifted up the sheets, saw a duffel bag and unzipped it and discovered a human arm, the affidavit stated. There was blood soaking underneath the bag which appeared to be pooling for “an extended period of time,” cops wrote. Investigators also saw blood spatter on a nearby dresser.
Malik is also accused of disabling the home’s security system and obstructing the cameras that could have captured footage that showed what happened. He also allegedly put his mom’s phone on the setting where it locks for an hour when someone enters an incorrect password.
Cops tried to speak with Malik after they put him in the police car but found him unresponsive. He was rushed to the hospital where he was intubated, according to the affidavit.
An autopsy will determine Sorto De Malik’s cause and manner of death. The incident remains under investigation.
Malik has a court hearing scheduled for Tuesday.
