A father and his juvenile son were allegedly attacked while trying to leave the Eastern Idaho State Fair, with two young men beating them with brass knuckles and stomping on them during a dispute over blocking traffic.
Papa Steven Sagapolutele, 21, and Kaleb Cutler, 22, are facing multiple charges, including aggravated battery, in connection with the Labor Day weekend assault on the dad and son, according to court records.
Deputies with the Bingham County Sheriff’s Office were called to the Eastern Idaho State Fairground in Blackfoot around 11:15 p.m. on Saturday for a report of a fight in progress. When they arrived, the deputies found both of the victims “bleeding significantly” from injuries sustained during the alleged attack.
Arrest affidavits obtained by Law&Crime say the father was trying to leave the fairgrounds with his family when he encountered a group of people standing in the roadway.

“[The father] stated he and his family were leaving the fair when they encountered a group of individuals walking in the roadway and disrupting vehicle traffic,” the affidavits say. “According to [the father], motorists leaving the fair were honking at the group in an attempt to get them out of the roadway. [The father] stated he told the group to get out of the road.”
Cutler allegedly confronted the dad during the exchange and made “gang-related” comments.
“No one gives a s— about that, man,” the dad told Cutler, according to the affidavits. That’s when Cutler allegedly pulled out a set of silver-colored brass knuckles and began attacking the man. Police say Sagapolutele joined in and also used brass knuckles on the dad and his son.
“Kaleb … began assaulting him and struck him in the head with the brass knuckles,” the affidavits say about the dad. “[The father] stated he fell to the ground, at which point multiple individuals continued striking and kicking him. … [The father] stated that while he was on the ground, he repeatedly indicated he was done fighting and then heard his son … yelling.”
The dad told police he saw Sagapolutele and Cutler beating his son while he was on the ground. “Kaleb pushed [the son] against [the] vehicle while holding him by the neck, threw [the son] to the ground, and began stomping on [the son’s] stomach,” the affidavit alleges.
The victims were able to identify Sagapolutele and Cutler as two of the attackers. The others remained at large Thursday, including a suspect identified by police as Danion Hernandez.
Deputies reportedly chased Sagapolutele and Cutler after arriving at the scene of the fight and took both into custody. A set of brass knuckles with blood on them was recovered by investigators after deputies saw Cutler trying to get rid of them while being detained, the affidavits say.
Sagapolutele and Cutler face deadly-weapon enhancements in addition to aggravated battery charges. Sagapolutele is also charged with obstructing and delaying an officer, while Cutler faces charges of destruction of evidence and obstructing and delaying an officer.
Both men are scheduled to appear in court for preliminary hearings on Sept. 17.
