London, UK – Almost 30 years after Princess Diana‘s death, her brother Charles Spencer is reflecting on the days that changed his life forever. And in his new book, he has leveled some shocking accusations against King Charles.
In his book Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, Spencer describes the hours after the fatal accident in Paris – and his personal encounters with the then‑Prince Charles.
In August 1997, Spencer was at his home in Cape Town, South Africa, when his sister Jane first told him about the crash. Shortly afterward, he learned that Diana had died. The phone then rang nonstop, and among the callers was Charles.
The memory of that conversation remains deeply emotional for Spencer to this day. In the face of the horrific tragedy, Charles sounded remarkably composed.

Spencer writes, “Unlike my other callers, who were stunned, barely able to articulate their condolences and offers of help, he sounded giddily elated — like a lottery winner, I remember thinking at the time, per People.
Diana’s sons, William and Harry, were only 15 and 12 then. “He let me know he had informed William and Harry of their mother’s death, first thing that morning, in their bedrooms at Balmoral. It all sounded strangely matter-of-fact, given the enormity of the disaster.”
“Looking back now, I suspect the prince’s first reaction must have been to think more of how this event might free him to marry the woman he loved, rather than appreciating the loss of one he did not,” Spencer continued.
With this, the Earl was referring to the prince’s relationship with his current wife, Queen Camilla, to whom he has been married for 20 years.
According to Spencer, a subsequent phone call with Charles also escalated.
“Prince Charles continued his stream of anger, without me interrupting. Then he stopped,” he recalled.
“I assumed the pause signaled an effort to bring himself under control, but then he unleashed down the phone what I have always taken to be his pent-up contempt for Diana, and his horror that the world was so bowled over by her death.”

“‘Rest assured,’ he hissed, ‘We’ll forget her soon enough!'” Spencer wrote.
This particular claim has already drawn a rare and fierce response from Buckingham Palace.
“While we do not comment on books as a matter of principle, His Majesty is mindful that the pain of fraternal grief can cloud reason, affect judgment and color memory in ways others do not recognize, even many years after such a loss,” a palace spokesperson said Wednesday.
