After a second guest was injured on consecutive charters during Episode 17, the Below Deck Mediterranean Season 11 crew began to wonder if M/Y Akira One and its crew were cursed.

“It’s two in a row now. This is giving me Final Destination vibes,” deckhand Massi Scarcia joked during Below Deck Med’s Sept. 28 episode.
It came after charter guest Vitor hit his head on the ceiling of Akira One in an attempt to go down the inflatable slide. After crying out in pain, he ran down to his fellow guests, holding his head as blood gushed out. As lead deckhand Joe Bradley and other crew members tried to hold a towel on Vitor’s head to staunch the bleeding, Captain Sandy Yawn called for a medic.
“How do we keep injuring the guests?” Massi asked producers. “First we broke [a guest’s] shoulder,” he pointed out, referencing the previous charter’s guest mishap. “Now this guy popped his head open.”
The piling up injuries were also noted by the interior crew, as Kat Johnston pointed out to fellow stew Gen Lillie, “Another day, another injury.”
Although the medic informed Vitor his head gash was “a pretty good one,” he was able to clean the cut and bandage it. But the injury forced Vitor to retire to his room at the end of the episode.
Details of the first guest injury on Below Deck Med Season 11, Episode 15
As Massi and the crew acknowledged, the head wound was hardly the first injury they’d dealt with during Below Deck Med Season 11. During Episode 15, a guest hurt her shoulder while Joe was towing the inflatable tube, with deckhand Cooper Dawson sharing her “shoulder might be out of socket.”

Kat, who was riding in the inflatable with the guests, added, “I’m pretty sure I can see a bone like right here, that should be up here.”
Joe shared his guilt after driving the tender that was towing the float. “This is really f—king bad,” he confessed to producers, and doctors later confirmed that the guest would need shoulder surgery when she returned home.

It wasn’t just the guests who needed medical attention during Below Deck Med Season 11. Sandy was forced to call a medic during Episode 7, when Cooper accidentally ingested peanuts, of which he was “highly allergic.”

Luckily, the medic ruled Cooper was stable and able to work after taking two Benadryl. “What a relief to hear from the medic that Cooper’s gonna be okay,” Sandy told producers at the time. “When you have such a healthy young man so vulnerable, it’s hard to see. Making sure that he’s taken care of is my number one priority. Anaphylactic reactions are nothing to play with.”
