ALLEGHENY COUNTY, Pa. (TCN) — A 32-year-old man is behind bars after police allege he entered a home through a back window and stabbed a pediatrician and his wife just 14 hours after allegedly raping and robbing a woman going for a walk.
According to the Allegheny County Police Department, first responders arrived at a home shortly after midnight on Sept. 24 after receiving a report of a stabbing. They located a man and woman inside suffering from stab wounds; the man was pronounced dead and the woman was taken to a local hospital for treatment. A homicide unit and detectives were requested so an investigation could begin.
The deceased victim was identified as 46-year-old Idris Evans, according to police. ABC News reports he worked as a pediatric critical care doctor at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
According to Evans’ wife, whose name has not been released by authorities, Evans called the suspect “Elijah” during the alleged attack but she herself did not know him, ABC News reports. She claimed he called himself “God” repeatedly. The couple’s 8- and 12-year-old children were home during the alleged attack. Evans’ wife said she told them to go to a neighbor’s house and neither child was harmed, according to ABC News.
The inside of the home was described as “a very violent scene,” per ABC News. The outlet reports that mirrors and furniture were allegedly broken, and a blood-covered kitchen knife was allegedly found in an upstairs bathroom. Investigators believe that the home was allegedly accessed by the suspect via a back window.
A K9 search behind the home allegedly found a suspect with a laceration on his hand, and police detained him and transported him to a local hospital for treatment. The suspect was identified as Elijah Hemingway, according to police.
During his interview with police, Hemingway reportedly claimed Evans had invited him to the home but did not say how the two met, per ABC News. He allegedly admitted he stabbed Evans and his wife with a “Michael Myers-style knife” following an altercation.
Hemingway was charged Sept. 24 in connection with the double stabbing, according to police. During their investigation, police learned a woman walking on a path had allegedly been sexually assaulted by Hemingway the previous day. In addition, he allegedly stole her phone. Investigators recovered this cellphone during their investigation.
According to WTAE, the victim of the alleged sexual assault stated that Hemingway grabbed her from behind, which made her fall. She alleged he forced her to perform oral sex on him and then raped her. He is facing charges of rape, sexual assault, and robbery, according to police.
The alleged home invasion and double stabbing took place 14 hours after the alleged sexual assault, WTAE reports.
According to court records viewed by the New York Post, Hemingway was reportedly out on nonmonetary bail at the time of the alleged attacks. He had been arrested in February for theft and July for burglary, per the records.
The Volusia Sheriff’s Office in Florida announced Hemingway was arrested and charged for domestic battery in March 2025 and counts of battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence, and violation of pretrial release in April 2025. In the April 2025 arrest, authorities responded to a bank after an employee there alleged Hemingway was making threats.
A deputy who made contact with Hemingway said, “Hemingway made comments about being in a simulation and identified himself as the pharaoh Tutankhamun, leading the deputy to attempt to secure him for a mental health evaluation.”
According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, Hemingway was held involuntarily for mental health treatment until deemed competent to stand trial. He later pleaded no contest and was sentenced to time served.
WTAE reports Hemingway was denied bond in both the alleged double stabbing and alleged sexual assault cases and is behind bars awaiting preliminary hearings.
