Iowa man slapped with 58-year sentence for beating newborn daughter to death

POLK COUNTY, Iowa (TCN) — A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to 58 years behind bars in connection with the homicide of his 2-month-old daughter last year.

According to the Polk County Attorney’s Office, Dylan Brown — also known as Guy Green — said he woke up on Aug. 7, 2025, and discovered that his baby, Mia Green, was not breathing.

Brown’s attorney, Andrew Petrovich, said, “He started striking the child, thinking it was the best course of action. … There is no evidence to suggest he had an ill will toward baby Mia. He has trouble controlling his emotions when triggered,” according to the county attorney’s office.

A pathologist testified that the injuries found on Green included skull, pubic bone, rib, tibia, and clavicle fractures, and were not consistent with CPR or trauma from a car accident, according to the county attorney’s office.

Court documents obtained by KCCI state that Brown beat the infant more than 40 times and then strangled her mother until she lost consciousness.

According to the county attorney’s office, Brown’s criminal history includes nine violations of a no-contact order against Green’s mother.

We Are Iowa reports Brown was initially charged with multiple felonies in connection with Green’s death and the state dismissed the charges, saying they needed more time to gather evidence and review the autopsy report. He was charged June 15 with first-degree murder and domestic assault impeding airflow causing serious injury.

In August, Brown pleaded guilty to child endangerment resulting in death in connection with Green’s death, and to domestic assault impeding air flow causing bodily injury to Green’s mother. He was sentenced on Oct. 9 to 58 years in prison and must serve 35 years before he is eligible for parole, according to the county attorney’s office. He received 55 years for the charges connected to Green and her mother and an additional three years for violating probation during a 2023 road-rage incident.

Of the sentence, Polk County District Judge Coleman McAllister said, “Mr. Brown was 6-foot-2, 350 pounds, and he beat his child to death. … These crimes are not only senseless, they shock the [conscience].”

Brown apologized in court, stating, “I hope I get the help I need in prison.”
