DUPAGE COUNTY, Ill. (TCN) — A 28-year-old man has been sentenced to 55 years in prison after pleading guilty to first-degree murder in connection with the 2024 death of his girlfriend.
According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, officers responded to a domestic disturbance call on July 17, 2024. Anthony Jimenez had reportedly dialed 911 and told dispatchers he had stabbed his girlfriend, 24-year-old Jessica Reyes, in the neck. When officers responded, they found Jimenez with blood on his hands and chest and took him into custody. Reyes was located in a back bedroom and was transported to the hospital for treatment, where she was pronounced dead.
Investigators learned the two had gotten into an argument and Jimenez had blocked the door, so Reyes escaped the apartment by climbing down to the parking lot from a third-floor balcony, according to the state’s attorney’s office. Reyes later went back to the apartment to gather her belongings, and she and Jimenez began arguing again. Jimenez then removed a knife from his pocket and began stabbing Reyes in the head, neck, face, and hands; he reportedly stopped the stabbing when his mother came into the room.
According to a GoFundMe page established by a family member, “Jessica Reyes was the most selfless, resilient, and goofiest human being. … She accomplished amazing things in her 24 years of life. She served the military for six years and became a veteran not too long ago. No matter what, she was there for people who needed her.”
Jimenez was sentenced to 55 years in prison on Oct. 16, according to the state’s attorney’s office. He had pleaded guilty to first-degree murder on May 8. He will not be eligible for parole until he has served 100 percent of his sentence.
