Is John Boyd Leaving ‘FBI’? Nina’s Job Offer and Scola’s Response, Explained

What To Know

  • Scola reveals that Nina’s been offered a major promotion in the latestĀ FBI episode.
  • However, it would mean a change for their family, one that Scola’s not so sure about.

Is life changing in a major way for Scola (John Boyd) and Nina (Shantel VanSanten, returning in the November 16 episode) onĀ FBI?Ā Warning: Spoilers forĀ FBI Season 9 Episode 5 ahead!

Near the beginning of the episode, as they walk over to their desks, Maggie (Missy Peregrym) asks Scola if the rumors are true; when they reach their floor, it’s a big deal. OA (Zeeko Zaki) is the one to get straight to it and ask if Nina is getting her own task force. Scola confirms she was offered it (with her own hires and own budget).

ā€œThat’s the real deal, man. Big step up,ā€ Jubal (Jeremy Sisto) remarks.

Scola tells the others that Nina hasn’t accepted it yet, but Maggie says she has to because it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. He points out it’s a lot of work and their son Dougie is getting older, but he’ll support her whatever she decides.

Eva (Juliana Aiden Martinez) can tell there’s something he’s not saying, but he insists it’s ā€œnothing.ā€

Scola does eventually open up to her, after tellingly commenting, Ā ā€œThis guy, I don’t know, what he’s willing to sacrifice for love,ā€ in relation to someone connected to the case.

It’s when Eva calls Scola out on being so stressed about good news with Nina’s promotion that he reveals, Ā ā€œJob’s in San Diego … She got the offer four days ago. Everything she ever wanted. She’d have to move to California.ā€

Would Scola? ā€œI don’t know. She’s worked so hard for this. … Her whole career. But we have a life here. We’d have to uproot everything. Just the sacrifice that’s needed if Nina takes this gig, I just don’t know if our family would survive that,ā€ he admits to his partner. ā€œI told her not to take it, Eva. I said she shouldn’t accept the promotion.ā€

After wrapping the case, Eva tells him that he can’t stand in Nina’s way just because it’s going to be hard. ā€œThank you,ā€ he says. ā€œJust for all of it.ā€

Then, after she’s walked away, he leaves Nina a voicemail: ā€œHey, it’s me. I’ve been thinking more about San Diego. I think you should take the job. It’s worth it. We’ll figure it out, OK? I love you.ā€ But will he be going with her?
