March 14, 1933 – January 28, 2023

Heaven gained a special angel, one who thought of her family first every step of the way.  Connie (Schlepp) Steiger touched many people’s lives through her sewing skills, altering clothing that most would not tackle.   She died on Jan. 28, 2023, at the Mobridge Regional Hospital. Honoring her request, there will be no funeral; she was buried in a private ceremony surrounded by her family.

She was born in Mobridge on March 14, 1933, the second child and first daughter of Gottlieb and Emma (Schutz) Schlepp. After graduating from Mobridge High school in 1951, Connie worked at Montana-Dakota Utilities, saving money for college and even buying appliances for her family. She went to Northern State College to become a teacher. There she met Clayton Steiger, a farm boy from Glenham. When her father suffered a stroke, she quit school to help her family. During that time, Clayton was the bright light in her life.

Clayton and Connie married on Dec. 11, 1954, at the United Church of Christ in Selby and moved to the Steiger family farm north of Glenham. Connie devoted her life to caring for her husband and five children, sewing not only clothing for the kids, but seat covers for pickups and tractors.

In 1996, she and Clayton retired and moved to Mobridge where they lived for 26 years. She continued sewing, doing alterations for Western Rancher and for others in the community. She enjoyed visiting with her sewing customers.

Throughout her life, Connie’s cheeky sense of humor brought laughter and joy to those who loved her.  The past three months family members lovingly cared for Connie in her home.  Her caregivers enjoyed every minute of being with her and are grateful for the many memories they will carry in their hearts forever.

Connie is survived by her husband Clayton; children—daughters Christie (Fred) Delfanian of Brookings and Trudy (Tom) Schreiner of Piedmont and sons, Marley and Randy of Glenham and Tracy (Judy) Steiger of Owatonna, Minnesota; all her siblings—brothers Richard (Anne) Schlepp of Northbrook, Illinois, Gayle (Barb) Schlepp of Auburn, Washington, and Bill (Nancy) Schlepp of Kent, Washington and sisters Barbara Opie of Mobridge and Judy (Terry) Godfrey of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; grandchildren Jess (Eric) Witlock of Eureka, Cigi Steiger of Fargo, North Dakota; Neemah (Danielle) Delfanian of Liverpool, New York, Reekah Delfanian of Madison, Wisconsin, Shireen Delfanian of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Ryan, Evan and Brandon Steiger of Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota, as well as great grandchildren, Camryn and Aiden Witlock. She was preceded in death by her parents, Emma and Gottlieb Schlepp, and brother-in-law Don Opie.
