TOOMBS COUNTY, Ga. (TCN) —Â A mother recently entered a plea deal after her daughter died from suspected child abuse.
According to a news release from the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office, Taylor Hughes pleaded guilty on July 17 to one count of felony murder and two counts of first-degree cruelty to children in connection with the death of 4-year-old Reese Carter Hughes. She was sentenced to life in prison plus 20 years.
On the evening of March 14, the sheriff’s office received a call about an unresponsive child who was en route to a hospital. Emergency medical services personnel intercepted the vehicle at a convenience store and transported Carter Hughes to Memorial Health Meadows Hospital in Vidalia while performing lifesaving measures. The 4-year-old girl was pronounced deceased shortly after arriving at the hospital.
According to the sheriff’s office, further investigation revealed that Hughes “failed to protect little Reese from physical abuse inflicted by her boyfriend, Seth Brown, and failed to get the child prompt medical attention.”
Hughes will reportedly testify against her boyfriend in his upcoming trial.
