HARVEST, Ala. (TCD) — A 36-year-old former political campaign chairman faces charges after allegedly sexually assaulting a 54-year-old man during a dispute and killing him.
According to a news release from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, on March 7, deputies responded to a home on Capshaw Road, where they found Derek Walls deceased. Detectives identified Kyle Lewter as the primary suspect in the victim’s death and arrested him on an initial charge of murder.
According to records from the Madison County Detention Center, Lewter also faces a charge of sexual torture –– sexual abuse using an inanimate object.
Police suspect the two men knew each other and got into a physical fight that led to Walls’ death. Court documents reviewed by WHNT-TV say Walls died of blunt force trauma with a hammer. Lewter allegedly sexually assaulted the man with an inanimate object while he was still alive.
According to WHNT, Lewter had reportedly worked as a campaign chairman in Senator Tom Butler’s office and previously served as vice chairman of the Madison County Young Republicans club.
