ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (TCN) — A 64-year-old man has been arrested and charged with open murder after police say he fatally shot his son and beat his son’s girlfriend with the butt of a shotgun.
KOAT reports that on Sept. 20, 34-year-old Matthew Leib was at home with his girlfriend, whose name has not been released, and another friend. Matthew Leib’s father, Mark Leib, returned to the home after work and allegedly started talking about how he wanted to kill someone. Matthew Leib’s girlfriend guided Mark Leib to a bedroom and shut the door before he allegedly came out holding a shotgun.
The woman tried to push Mark Leib into a bathroom, but he allegedly grabbed her by the shirt and punched her in the chin, according to KOAT. A criminal complaint obtained by Law & Crime alleges Mark Leib pointed the weapon at her and said he was going to “blow her f—ing brains out.”
According to the criminal complaint, Matthew Leib jumped in front of his girlfriend and asked his father what was wrong with him. Matthew Leib, his girlfriend, and the other friend all tried to leave the scene when Mark Leib said, “I’m ready to f—ing smoke you motherf—ers.”
Matthew Leib’s girlfriend and friend got outside before they realized Matthew Leib was not with them; Mark Leib allegedly came outside and said, “I f—ing shot him, get inside.” According to Law & Crime, Matthew Leib’s girlfriend dialed 911 after she found him inside the house suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.
Once she was inside the house, Mark Leib allegedly hit her several times on the head with the butt of the shotgun before first responders arrived. According to Law & Crime, Matthew Leib was unable to be saved by the time paramedics arrived. When officers detained Mark Leib, he allegedly told them, “I killed that piece of s—.”
Investigators later learned that Mark Leib allegedly dialed 911 from a blocked number, according to Law & Crime, and allegedly admitted he had fatally shot his son.
KOAT reports Leib was charged with an open count of murder, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and one count of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
