Alley Mills returned to General Hospital as Heather Webber on Friday, October 30, surprising Trina Robinson (Tabyana Ali) and her crew at the Cat’s Eye Lounge.
Mills, who last appeared on the soap in 2024, had a feeling she’d be reprising Heather someday. “I kind of knew because my last line to little Ace [Heather’s grandson] was, ‘I’ll be back,’” she recalls. “But I went and did a play in Kansas, which was a trip, and then I came back to L.A. and heard that I was going to come back.”
Heather’s circumstances have changed considerably since her last stint ended with her conviction as the serial killer known as The Hook overturned. “My version of Heather’s life [is that] she was in prison the whole time, so all Alley has ever known about Heather is prison,” Mills explains. “And now, she comes back, and she’s really rich, and that’s been totally fun. As far as Heather is concerned, she’s cured. When she broke her hip and had that hip replacement, that’s when things started getting really muddled and dark in her mind. But now, she would never hurt anybody. She just has to convince everybody else of that.”

Heather may be happy to be back, but the feeling isn’t exactly mutual in Port Charles. “Every day, somebody new tells her how horrible she is,” muses Mills. “It’s been an uphill battle, and she just hopes that people will understand and forgive her. But with the wonderful voice of [co-head writers] Chris Van Etten and Elizabeth Korte, she just has so much spunk. I love the way they write her. She doesn’t really have a ton of boundaries and social awareness and softness. But she just won’t let people get her down. She’s like one of those dolls outside the gas station. You throw them down, and they pop back up. I feel like Heather is kind of like that now, but in Gucci.”
Offscreen, Mills’ return has been a much warmer experience. “It was awesome,” she raves. “I just think the actors on General Hospital are so amazing. I revere them, and so it was wonderful to see them. I loved seeing Maura [West, Ava Jerome] again, and Finola [Hughes, Anna Devane]. It’s been really fun to work with her. I saw Maurice [Benard, Sonny Corinthos] again and I’m going to go do his State of Mind podcast. It’s just great.”
Her first scenes were with Tabyana Ali, Giovanni Mazza [Gio Palmieri], Braedyn Bruner [Emma Scorpio-Drake] and Jens Austin Astrup [Kai Taylor], giving her the opportunity to work with some new scene partners right out of the gate. “That was so fun because I love working with Tab, but I’ve never worked with the other kids before,” she notes. “I’ve seen them on TV, but I have never met them before, and they’re really talented, and they definitely got in Heather’s face. And the blessed Shawn Reeves, the wonderful costumer, put me in this fabulous outfit.”
GH isn’t the only show where Mills is reprising a role. She recently filmed at The Bold and the Beautiful, where she has played Pamela Douglas since 2006. Her return was made even more special by the presence of Susan Flannery, who played Pam’s on-screen sister, Stephanie Forrester, and was visiting the studio.
“She’s a very good friend of mine, and it was just so incredible to be in the Forrester living room with Susan sitting there,” Mills says. “She was the force of that show. She was so amazing, and it was incredible to work with her all those years. She’s such a good actor and such a great person, and I was talking about Stephanie as Pam, and how much I missed her; there she was sitting in a chair. It was really weird. I have to be honest, it was uncanny. I could see her sitting on a director’s chair, and it was awesome. And it was great to see everybody.”
Back on GH, Mills is enjoying the chance to play a character who doesn’t hold back. “She just always says what she thinks. And I like that because people don’t normally get to do that,” Mills points out. “You don’t normally get to say to your boss, ‘You’re a jerk,’ but Heather would say that. So, I think people love characters that do stuff they wish they could because most people guard themselves from doing that in society. But Heather doesn’t have boundaries.”

One encounter with a fan gave Mills a memorable reminder of Heather’s impact. “I was going to a memorial in downtown L.A. one day, and I walked through a parking lot,” she relays. “There was this very sweet older woman who was unhoused, living on a blanket on the ground with this big cardboard thing behind her. She actually had somehow hooked up electricity and had a tiny little TV, and I said, ‘How are you, sweetheart? Are you OK?’ And she went, ‘Oh, Heather, you go get them, girl.’ I’m telling you, since that day, she’s been like my muse. I feel like people want people who are wounded, like Heather wants her to overcome. So, I feel like I’m doing it for her. Heather is going to stand up to Trina, she’s going to stand up to Portia [Robinson, Brook Kerr], she’s going to stand up to Britt [Westbourne, Kelly Thiebaud]. She’ll stand up to whoever.”
Mills’ return comes just as the daytime community gathers for the 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy night. She has won two Guest Performance trophies as Heather, most recently in 2025, making the timing particularly fitting. “It’s an amazing experience, especially at my age,” she reflects. “It almost felt like one of those lifetime things because it was so unexpected. It’s a really great thing to win an Emmy. You’re with all of your peers, and you’ve all worked your butts off all your life, and it’s cool to have recognition of years and years and years of working and loving being an actor.”
That she continues to find work as an actress is a point of pride for Mills. “It’s a trip,” she marvels. “I’m 75 years old, and my beloved [the late Orson Bean] has now been gone seven years, which I can’t believe. And since he left, I’ve been pretty much working the whole time. I just feel insanely grateful, and quite surprised. I’m just taking life a day at a time, but I just feel like the luckiest person in the world. I’m really happy and extremely grateful.”
