Bayer Leverkusen’s leadership maintains faith in Xabi Alonso’s dedication to the club, despite swirling rumors regarding his potential moves to Liverpool or Bayern Munich.
Alonso, currently at the helm of Leverkusen, is under contract until 2026, leading his team to the Bundesliga summit, eight points ahead of reigning champions Bayern Munich, who are parting ways with coach Thomas Tuchel at season’s end. This scenario has sparked speculation about Alonso succeeding Tuchel, given his prior stint with Bayern from 2014 to 2017.
While Alonso has been linked with a return to Liverpool following Jurgen Klopp’s impending departure, Klopp himself has hailed Alonso as a standout manager of his generation, further fueling speculation. However, Alonso has reiterated his focus on Leverkusen, emphasizing his commitment to their current objectives.
Bayer Leverkusen CEO has voiced confidence in Alonso’s allegiance to the club, expressing a desire to retain him long-term. Contrary to reports, Bayern Munich’s sporting director Max Eberl has denied any contact with Alonso, asserting that discussions about a new coach are ongoing.
Eberl added that Bayern is considering potential buyout options for Alonso’s Leverkusen contract, reportedly valued at £21 million, although there’s a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ in place allowing for his departure.
In essence, Bayer Leverkusen’s management stands behind Alonso’s commitment, aiming to keep him onboard. Alonso remains focused on his current role, with no official word on his future beyond his existing contract. Bayern Munich denies any contact with Alonso, as they continue their coach search, with Alonso’s status still uncertain.
