Brittany Cartwright’s 5-year-old son, Cruz Cauchi, is officially heading back to school, and she has some thoughts about this. The Valley mom of one has been so open about raising her child as a single mother and is continuing to do so on social media.
The Kentucky native took to her Instagram Story in late August, where she posted a throwback photo of Cruz before he attended his first day of preschool. In the throwback photo, Cruz, who was previously diagnosed with autism, can be seen sitting on a bench beside his embroidered backpack and lunch box, awaiting to attend his very first day of school. Brittany did some major reflection over the photo ahead of Cruz’s first day of kindergarten. “Awwww. When he started preschool & now he’s about to start kindergarten,” she wrote. “I can’t believe it, time flies.”
Ahead of Cruz’s first day of school, he has been spending some time with his friends. The Valley‘s Janet Caperna took to her Instagram Story, where she revealed that her son, Cameron Caperna, was spending time over at Brittany and Cruz’s house and playing in Cruz’s sensory room. “Cam loves Cruzy’s sensory room,” Janet wrote over the photo.
Brittany Cartwright shares new details about her son, Cruz, entering kindergarten
Brittany took to her podcast, When Reality Hits, on Aug. 14, where she opened up about Cruz going to school and the changes that it will bring to their family. “He’s about to start school soon, kindergarten. I cannot believe it. Time flies,” she explained in the episode. “He’s 5 years old, starting actual kindergarten, no more pre-school or anything like that. And it’s wild.”
“So I’ve just got to [get] used to the new schedule. He has to be there at 8 a.m. every morning, and they don’t even leave until 2:32,” she noted. “It just seems wild for Cruz to go to school for that long. But, [we’ve] got the IEP (individualized education program) in progress, and he’s going to have all the support and help he needs.”

Brittany Cartwright shares updates on Cruz’s autism journey
Brittany continued during the podcast episode, revealing that Cruz is still seeing his “occupational therapist and speech therapist” after school and on the weekends after he was diagnosed with autism in 2025. “So I just always make sure that Cruz is getting all the help that he needs, and he is thriving and doing so good,” she explained. “He is such a happy little boy, and I’m so proud of him every single day.”
“Cruz is just maybe a stronger person and a better person, and having more patience, and just seeing all the beauty in life and everything,” she added.
