Chicago mom allegedly stabbed newborn daughter in the chest, then jumped out of second-story window

CHICAGO (TCN) — A 25-year-old mother has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the fatal stabbing of her 1-month-old daughter.

On May 15, Nyhnia Stovall was found stabbed to death inside an apartment, CBS News reports. Investigators learned the baby was in the home with her mother, Tatianna Maxwell, and her biological father, whose name has not been released. Prosecutors allege Maxwell took the infant from her bassinet and threatened to hurt her before barricading herself inside a room. Maxwell then allegedly stabbed her daughter in the chest before jumping out of the second-story window.

WLS-TV reports Stovall was taken to a children’s hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Maxwell was taken to a hospital to be treated for her injuries and later allegedly apologized for the homicide, according to CBS. She said, “I did not mean it.”

Maxwell’s full detention hearing was scheduled for May 18, per CBS.
