The investigation into Drexel’s death was initially hampered by a lack of progress and false leads, but it gained momentum with Moody’s confession. On the night of April 25, 2009, Moody kidnapped Drexel, raped her, strangled her along the Santee River, and buried her body about four feet deep in a location on Old Town Avenue in Harmony Township, Georgetown. This case has seen a shift in focus from previous allegations of Drexel being gang-raped and fed to alligators, which were later abandoned.

Vause, who was present during the final hours of Drexel’s life, has been accused of making false statements to the FBI. According to the federal indictment, Vause lied about her whereabouts and the reason for her travel on the night Drexel was assaulted and killed by Moody.

She also allegedly claimed that Drexel had her cell phone with her during the ordeal, when in fact, Vause took the phone and discarded it somewhere between Georgetown and Charleston. Furthermore, Vause allegedly told investigators that Drexel voluntarily joined her and Moody to consume marijuana and cocaine, when in fact, Drexel was abducted under false pretenses.

Vause was arrested on Wednesday morning and is scheduled to be arraigned before U.S. Magistrate Judge Molly H. Cherry. This case highlights the complexities of cold cases and the importance of accurate and truthful statements from witnesses and suspects in the investigation process.
