CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (TCN) — The parents of a 3-year-old boy who allegedly brought a loaded gun to day care have been charged.
The Associated Press reports the child allegedly pulled a loaded gun out of his backpack on Sept. 28. No one was injured. Canton Police Chief Joseph Bialy said, “I don’t think there was any ill intent by truly anyone involved. I think it really falls back on safe security of a firearm, making sure that we know where our firearms are located, that they are not accessible to anyone.”
One of the child’s parents is a police officer in another jurisdiction, according to the AP. The gun the child allegedly brought to school was not a service weapon.
According to prosecutors, the child allegedly passed the weapon around to other children. “It is very unsettling to think about what may have happened in this case,” The Associated Press reports Wayne County prosecutor Kym Worthy said.
On Oct. 1, one of the child’s parents was charged with misdemeanor violation of Michigan’s gun storage law, and the parent who is a police officer was charged with creating risk of harm — fourth-degree child abuse, according to the AP. The names of the parents have not been released, and both have appeared in court and were released on bond.
