A New Mexico father blew his son away with a short-barreled shotgun, then began bashing the victim’s girlfriend with the “butt” of the weapon as she clutched her boyfriend’s body, according to police.
Mark Leib, 64, is accused of killing his son, Matthew Leib, 34, inside the family’s Albuquerque home on Sunday night following an afternoon of drinking, watching football and hanging out, according to a criminal complaint obtained by Law&Crime.
Bernalillo County prosecutors allege that Leib returned home agitated and began threatening his son, one of his son’s friends, and his girlfriend.
The friend told detectives that Mark was mumbling, “I’m going to kill somebody” and “I’m gonna hurt everybody,” according to the complaint.

The friend recounted telling Matthew Leib, “Hey man, your dad’s talking nonsense. Like he’s f—ing saying about killing somebody. We need to get the f— outta here,” according to the complaint. The friend began putting his shoes on and gathering his belongings and when he was leaving, he heard Matthew and Mark Leib arguing in the father’s bedroom, with Matthew Leib’s girlfriend also taking part, the complaint says.
Mark Leib allegedly pulled out his shotgun and began pointing it at the face of his son’s girlfriend, stating he was going “to blow her f—ing brains out.”
Matthew Leib jumped in front of Mark Leib and told him, “What the f— is wrong with you, dad?” Matthew Leib, his friend, and his girlfriend began walking away and Mark Leib allegedly yelled “I’m ready to f—ing smoke you motherf—ers.”
Matthew Leib’s friend and girlfriend both made it outside before realizing Matthew had stayed behind, prosecutors say.
The friend and girlfriend returned to check on Matthew Leib, and Mark Leib allegedly walked out to greet them while yelling, “I f—ing shot him, get inside.”
The girlfriend ran into the home and found Matthew Leib lying in the hallway with multiple gunshot wounds to his chest. She grabbed onto him and called 911.
“Mark came back into the residence and hit [the girlfriend] multiple times in the back of the head with the ‘butt’ of the shotgun as she was crying and holding on to Matthew,” the complaint says. “Officers arrived on scene, detaining Mark and providing medical attention to Matthew.”
Matthew Leib was beyond lifesaving measures by the time paramedics arrived. A neighbor had called police after hearing a loud gathering outside the home followed by an argument and two loud crashes she believed could have been gunshots.
Mark Leib also later called 911 from a blocked or unknown number, according to police.
“I f—ing killed him,” he said repeatedly. “I killed my f—ing son.”
Police said that when officers detained him, Mark Leib continued yelling, “I killed that piece of s—.”
Detectives later interviewed Mark Leib at the police station after reading him his Miranda rights.
Mark Leib declined to answer questions at the police station, saying, “I’m gonna just plead the fifth right now.”
A search of the home turned up Matthew Leib’s body in the hallway, the short-barreled shotgun, two spent shell casings and bullet impacts in the hallway walls, according to the complaint.
Mark Leib was arrested and charged with an open count of murder, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
