A 49-year-old man in Arizona is accused of killing his pregnant wife, allegedly stabbing her in the chest and running her over inside their garage before telling deputies he lashed out at the victim after years of “torture.”

Joseph Jay Clark was taken into custody last week and charged with two counts of second-degree murder in the death of his 39-year-old wife, Noelle Clark, and their unborn child, authorities announced.

According to a press release from the Pima County Sheriff”s Office, deputies responded to a home in the 17000 block of South Ridgerunner Drive in Vail around 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 9 for a report of a domestic disturbance. Arriving first responders saw Joseph Clark leaving the home and detained him without incident.

Deputies searched the home and found Noelle Clark suffering from “an apparent gunshot wound.” She was pronounced dead at the scene. The couple’s two children, ages 3 and 4, were found unharmed inside the home.

While the initial announcement from the sheriff’s office said Noelle Clark appeared to have been shot, an interim criminal complaint obtained by Tucson CBS affiliate KOLD reportedly described far different injuries than a gunshot wound.

According to the report, Noelle Clark was found beneath a blanket in the garage with clear signs of head trauma and a deep chest wound consistent with stabbing. The report also stated that she “showed obvious signs of pregnancy.”

Investigators recovered a bloody knife from the children’s bedroom, according to the complaint.

Investigators said the evidence from inside the home indicated that Joseph Clark likely “had the thought process of disposing of [his wife’s] remains,” according to the complaint.

The available reports do not explain the difference between the initial gunshot description and the injuries later detailed in the complaint. The sheriff’s office did not immediately respond to a request for clarification from Law&Crime.

During the arrest, Joseph Clark allegedly told deputies that “he had been tortured” with electric shocks by his wife “over a couple of years.”

“I was shocked, that’s what caused [this],” he allegedly said.

However, deputies reportedly could not find any injuries or signs of torture on Joseph Clark.

Tucson NBC affiliate KVOA reported that Noelle Clark also had bloody tire marks on her arm, which allegedly indicated she had been run over.

The Clark children were placed in the custody of the Arizona Department of Child Safety, Phoenix Fox affiliate KSAZ reported.

Clark made his initial appearance in court on Oct. 10, when a judge ordered him to be held on a $1 million bond. He is scheduled to return to court for another hearing on Oct. 20, records show.
