‘Dateline’s Josh Mankiewicz Shares His Thoughts on Nancy Guthrie Case

What To Know

  • Nancy Guthrie has been missing since February 1, when police believe she was abducted from her Tucson home.
  • Dateline correspondent Josh Mankiewicz called the case “heartbreaking.”
  • Savannah Guthrie has offered a $1 million reward for information leading to her mother’s recovery.

Dateline‘s Josh Mankiewicz has shared his thoughts on the Nancy Guthrie case, saying that even with “all the publicity in the world,” sometimes “it still doesn’t make a difference.”

Mankiewicz and his fellow Dateline correspondents spoke with Us Weekly as the investigation into Nancy’s disappearance reached its nine-month mark on November 1. Nancy, the 84-year-old mother of Today‘s Savannah Guthrie, went missing on February 1, when police believe she was abducted from her Tucson home.

“We deal all the time with families who are going through what the Guthrie family is going through, just a little more privately — I think without that colossal torrent of publicity — but they’re going through the same thing,” Mankiewicz told the outlet. “It is hell on earth.”

The veteran reporter, who also hosts the Missing in America podcast, described the case as “heartbreaking,” adding, “My heart goes out to Savannah as it does to all the people who are in that situation. Unfortunately, there’s way too many of them.”

Blayne Alexander, a correspondent on Dateline who worked alongside Savannah at the Today show and NBC News for years, also spoke to Us Weekly. She revealed that it still makes her “sick to my stomach” when she thinks about the case.

“I know Savannah. We all know Savannah. I love her dearly, and she’s one of the most incredible people,” Alexander said. “To see something like this happen is unbelievable. But to see it happen in such close proximity is hard. We just send all the love to her. And yes, we can’t stop saying that phone number enough.”

Savannah and the Guthrie family have urged people to call the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI with any information they may have about Nancy’s disappearance. The Today cohost also reiterated that a $1 million reward is on the table for information that leads to the recovery of her mother.

“Our mom was a light in this world. We want to celebrate her and give her the dignity she deserves,” Savannah shared on Instagram on Sunday (November 1). “Please. We are begging you. Please help us. Thank you to all those who have been kind and shown the best of humanity. Join us in praying without ceasing.”
