A Colorado woman let her 91-year-old mother with a broken hip crawl out into the 90-degree heat, where she cried out for help on the sidewalk before suffering cardiac arrest and dying, cops say.
The daughter, Kim Johnston, 59, told Colorado Springs police she was annoyed with her mom that morning before letting the elderly woman go out into their front yard, according to court documents obtained by the local ABC affiliate KRDO.
The mother, Son Johnston, crawled outside after Johnston opened the door for her, police say. Johnston claimed she left a bottle of water and an umbrella with her, but investigators did not find the items.
Kim Johnston called police after hearing her mom scream out for help, KRDO reports, citing the court documents.

Officers responded just before 12:30 p.m. that Wednesday, July 15, 2025, and found an “unresponsive” woman – Son Johnston — lying on the sidewalk outside a home on Hayman Terrace near Pikes Peak Avenue and South Circle Drive.
Kim Johnston allegedly admitted to checking on her mother only once or twice over several hours before calling police.
During the 911 call, Kim Johnston told a dispatcher she believed her mom was dehydrated and passing out, but she claimed the situation wasn’t urgent, per the court documents. Kim told paramedics who arrived on scene that her mother had fallen a few hours earlier and was lying on rocks in their front yard.
According to KRDO, Kim Johnston was accused of caretaker neglect after allegedly leaving her mom on the floor for over six hours following a fall.
Court documents state Son Johnston wore long sleeves and pants when she crawled outside. She was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
Johnston faces charges of manslaughter and negligent death of an at-risk person. She is being held on a $4,000 bond.
