MEMPHIS, Tenn. (TCN) — Police are investigating the remains of three unidentified children discovered in a wooded area.
The Associated Press reports that a dog walker found a human skull on March 8 and contacted the police.
The Memphis Police Department announced the investigation and its progress on April 22. The dog walker’s discovery led to a search of the area over the coming weeks, assisted by a K-9 who led police to a drainage ditch where more remains were found on April 1. On April 2, 14 more bones were found by a team working nearby.
A medical examiner determined that all of the remains were from children between the ages of 3 and 7, according to the New York Post.
More than 170 people are working on the investigation, including determining the identities of the children; they are reportedly not connected to any missing persons cases in the area, per the AP.
The New York Post reports that at a press conference, Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis said, “Somebody knows where these children have come from. Someone knows the missing children that we have discovered in this area. It’s heartbreaking. It’s disturbing.”
According to police, investigators are also working to determine the causes of death for each of the three children.
The investigation is ongoing.
