Although Hailey Glassman declares that her relationship with reality television star Jon Gosselin “ruined [her] life,” she also admits that if it never happened, she’d never have married her current husband, Rubin. In the above preview of The Real Housewives of New York City Season 16, Episode 3 (airing Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 8 p.m. ET on Bravo), Hailey opens up to her castmate Jessel Taank on her dramatic past, as well as her “unconventional” marriage.

“We broke up, because when you’re in the media, and you’re in the tabloids, it’s awful, and I was so beaten down,” Hailey reveals of her reasonings for ending her romance with Jon. “And then Rubin stepped in. I ran into him in [Martha’s] Vineyard. He was like, ‘Oh give me a call.’ Gave me his number.”
Hailey adds that her new relationship with Rubin happened at just the right time in her life. “When we got married, there was a lot going on. I was in the tabloids. I just wanted to be safe in marriage,” she explains of why she walked down the aisle during the first look at RHONY’s Sept. 22 episode.
Then, Hailey frankly confesses to producers that her relationship with Jon is the reason she married Rubin. “The whole Jon Gosselin situation, if that never happened, my life would be completely different today. And when I say that, I would have never married Rubin,” she admits. “I would have never chose a life based off safety and survival. I didn’t choose the life that I wanted for myself, I chose a life to be safe, and to protect myself and my soul.”

Hailey opened up in the RHONY Season 16 trailer about her “lavender marriage” to Rubin, and she shares more details with Jessel during the first look at the Sept. 22 episode.
“So we have like an unconventional marriage,” she says. He like lets me do my thing — just no other guys. Like, I don’t date other men. But it’s not like some poly situation — nothing like that.”

Hailey adds that she and Rubin have a relationship dating back to childhood. “We’ve known each other since he’s 12, remember?” she reminds Jessel. “We grew up together.”
She previously shared they were neighbors in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, and met at sailing camp as children. They’ve now been married for 15 years.

Hailey fills Jessel in on exactly how she and Jon Gosselin met during the above preview of RHONY’s Sept. 22 episode, and shares that his connection to her family predated the reality show Jon & Kate Plus 8.
“He was best friends with my mom before Jon & Kate Plus 8 ever existed,” she says. “[Kate] had six kids at once, and wanted a tummy tuck. So my dad did the tummy tuck. My mom [helped her] recover…at the house and stuff. From there, they became family friends.”
Hailey adds she met Jon when she was just 22 years old, while he and Kate were separated. “[Jon and Kate] couldn’t tell the public, so Jon called my mom and said, ‘Hey, I can’t go to a hotel. Can I move into your house?’” she recounts to Jessel. “He moves to my parents house. I come home from college 2009, next thing I know…a friendship turned into more.”

Hailey recalls one particular moment that contributed to the end of her romance with Jon. “We were on my dad’s yacht, and someone got a photo, and then it was on TMZ and they were like, ‘Jon With Mystery Woman’ and ‘plastic surgeon’s daughter.’ So, it became this whole like ‘Homewrecking Hailey.’ ‘She ruined a family of eight.’”
Of the headlines, Hailey clarifies, “That was never the story.”
