After almost killing her boyfriend in the chest with a steak knife at a hotel nearly a year ago to the day this week, a woman in Alabama was arrested and charged with murder when police say this time she succeeded in killing her now-husband.
Ashley Latrice Wright, 25, was taken into custody on Dec. 4 by the Moulton Police Department, arrest records reviewed by Law&Crime show. Originally from Clarksdale, Mississippi, Wright was extradited to Alabama after police in her home state detained her during a traffic stop, according to Huntsville CBS affiliate WHNT.
Police were reportedly dispatched to the Relax Inn in Moulton on Nov. 30 and upon arriving found Wright’s husband, Carl Dewayne Johnson, 41, dead and with a puncture wound in his chest. Wright was identified as a suspect right away, the Moulton Advertiser reported
It was a year ago on Dec. 1, 2022, when police had arrested Wright at that same Relax Inn for allegedly stabbing Johnson, though the couple were reportedly not married at the time.
Johnson told police that the two had been drinking and arguing when Wright allegedly grabbed a steak knife and stabbed him in the chest, WHNT reported.
Wright fled the hotel after that attack but was spotted by a firefighter and arrested in short order, the station reported. She was charged with second-degree domestic violence assault. Notably, that matter was waived to a grand jury this February and appears to still be pending.
It has been a year of legal woes for Wright. She was also arrested this June and slapped with strangulation and suffocation charges tied to domestic violence, the Molton Advertiser reported.
She is now being held without bail at the Lawrence County Jail.
