TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (TCN) —Â A 37-year-old man who was recently released after serving a four-year sentence for child porn possession was allegedly caught viewing similar material at a public library.
According to court documents obtained by WXIN, Nicholas Custance was allegedly looking at child sexual abuse material on a computer at a public library on July 29, prompting another library patron to call the police.
Court records obtained by WXIN state Custance was convicted of possession of child pornography in both 2018 and 2021 and was released from prison in May after four years. His parole officer had reportedly told him to avoid libraries.
A search of the library computer found that Custance had allegedly downloaded the material to send to others after receiving requests on social media. There were allegedly about 2,500 files depicting children ranging from teens to infants, according to WXIN. Police also confiscated a flip phone from Custance.Â
He faces charges of multiple counts of possession of child sexual abuse material and distribution of child sexual abuse material, per WXIN. The Journal-Courier reports that in addition, Custance was given the sentence-enhancing charge of being a habitual offender.
WTHR reports Custance is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 9. According to the Journal & Courier, he is behind bars in lieu of a $150,000 surety bond and a $15,000 cash bond.
