A Florida man from The Villages who was “looking for a sugar baby” is accused of running a Tinder date four decades his junior off the road and pointing a gun at her friend.
David O’Brien, 67, is facing four counts of aggravated battery and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. According to a probable cause arrest affidavit, deputies with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office responded to a car accident on July 22. O’Brien allegedly had a gun.
Cops found five people on scene, including O’Brien and the four victims. They were taken to the police station, where officers began to unravel the Tinder date that went south.
O’Brien matched with the 21-year-old victim on June 27. There wasn’t much chatter until July 12, when O’Brien informed the woman that he was “looking for a sugar baby.” The two exchanged numbers and began texting each other.
The defendant told her he would give her $1,000 each time they met, plus dinner.

“I love to shop for you,” O’Brien allegedly added.
They agreed to meet for dinner at a local restaurant on July 27. The victim had three friends drive her to the restaurant. O’Brien took her to a lingerie store, where he bought her three items, cops said. They ate dinner, where he gave her $600, according to the affidavit.
After dinner, the two would-be lovebirds went back to the defendant’s home. But once there, the victim began to feel “uncomfortable” and asked that her friends come pick her up.
This apparently upset O’Brien, who told the victim she should “give the money back because that was not the agreement,” cops wrote. The victim drove away with her friends. O’Brien allegedly hopped in his Ford F-150 pickup truck and “began to chase” the victims.
When the victims reached a roundabout, O’Brien “rammed the back” of the victims’ car, causing it to slam into a pole, cops wrote. Three of the victims ran away. O’Brien allegedly pointed a gun at another victim, a 22-year-old man, and “told him to get on the ground or he would kill him.”
The victim got on the ground but escaped to safety when he noticed O’Brien was distracted. O’Brien walked to his truck when he heard cops arriving at the scene.
In an interview with police after receiving his Miranda rights, O’Brien allegedly confirmed he was looking for a “sugar baby” and would pay $1,000 each visit. He said he had a similar arrangement in another state and it “worked out perfectly for him.”
He said once his date asked to leave his home, he realized “things were not going to go as he had planned” so he asked for his money back. O’Brien claimed the victim said she would give the money back once she was outside the home, but she hopped into her friends’ car and took off.
O’Brien said he felt like he had been “scammed,” which made him upset, per the complaint. He allegedly admitted to chasing the victims, but said it was the victims who lost control and crashed. The suspect said he believed the car was stolen because the victims got out and ran. He pulled out his gun in order to “control the situation” but denied pointing the gun at the male victim, cops wrote.
Cops took him to the Sumter County Jail, where he has since posted a $90,000 bond. His next court date is set for Aug. 14.
