A 47-year-old Michigan man who shot and killed his wife and their six children before setting fire to the family home and turning the gun on himself had previously been accused of having an affair with an intern who was younger than his wife.
Kristopher Karolkiewicz fatally shot his wife, Amanda “Mandy” Karolkiewicz, 39, and the couple’s six children — four boys, ages 15, 12, 11 and 5, and two 11-year-old adopted girls — then fatally shot himself inside the family’s Grand Haven Township home, authorities announced.
The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office announced new details about the murder-suicide during a Monday news conference.

Investigators concluded Karolkiewicz shot his family, then intentionally set multiple fires in the home before shooting himself.
“This is an unspeakable tragedy that we may never completely understand,” Sheriff Eric DeBoer said in a statement read during the news conference. “Our hearts remain with the family, friends, classmates, neighbors and everyone affected by this unimaginable loss.”
Deputies initially responded to the family’s home Friday morning after reports of a smoky odor in the area, but found nothing unusual. Roughly three hours later, additional calls brought them back to the home, where they found smoke coming from the residence and discovered the seven victims and Karolkiewicz inside.
Some of the bodies were located in bedrooms. The family’s dogs and at least one cat also died in the fire.
Authorities said they are not searching for any additional suspects and are still working to determine what led to the killings.
Amanda’s mother and stepfather, Becky and Steve Lawwill, remembered her as “a kind and devoted soul who loved her family and her students.”
“We treasured every moment we had with her and her six children, and words cannot adequately address our devastation,” they said in a statement. “We pray for God’s peace and comfort as we grieve their deaths and honor their lives.”
The American Heart Association confirmed Karolkiewicz had served as its national vice president of sales and marketing from September 2023 until his employment ended earlier this month. The organization declined to discuss the circumstances surrounding his departure, citing personnel policy.
Amanda Karolkiewicz worked as a substitute teacher for Grand Haven Area Public Schools, which recognized her earlier this year for going “above and beyond for students, especially when they’re having a hard day, responding with empathy, patience, and care.”
While investigators have not identified a motive, reports published after the killings revealed that Amanda Karolkiewicz had previously posted online about serious problems in the couple’s marriage. The Holland Sentinel reported that it authenticated a Reddit account belonging to Amanda Karolkiewicz by matching details about the couple’s marriage, children, occupations and other biographical information. That information was independently confirmed by The Detroit News.
In posts spanning several years, Amanda Karolkiewicz described meeting her husband when she was an intern, writing that it was like she was “living in a Hallmark Movie.” However, she later accused him of having an affair with another, younger intern.
She ultimately wrote that it was primarily because of their children that she decided to commit to repairing the marriage.
“I love my kids more than I hate my husband right now,” she wrote in one post on the subreddit “As One After Infidelity,” a support forum for spouses attempting reconciliation after cheating.
In another lengthy post, she described leaving the marriage with six children as “insanely terrifying” and wrote that her husband had “major red flags” she ignored early in their relationship. She also described counseling sessions that she believed left him angry and defensive rather than receptive.
The couple met while working for a beverage company in 2008 and married the following year. Amanda later chronicled much of their family life on a parenting blog and social media, often writing about her Christian faith, motherhood and raising six children. Kristopher Karolkiewicz similarly celebrated their marriage in a 2019 Facebook post, calling himself “a very lucky guy.”
Investigators have not released the names of the six children.
The sheriff’s office said the case remains open as detectives continue working to determine what occurred in the hours leading up to the killings.
