A man and woman in Illinois were arrested after a routine traffic stop led authorities to discover that the couple was allegedly transporting four unsecured children and two dogs inside the enclosed area of a U-Haul box truck.
Sheriff’s deputies took Roy Hamel II and Sabrina McKinney into custody last week and charged them with six counts each of endangering the life or health of a child, authorities announced.

According to a press release from the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, deputies stopped a vehicle driven by Hamel at 6:07 p.m. on Interstate 55’s northbound on-ramp in Pontiac, Illinois. The area is just under 100 miles southwest of Chicago.
The driver of the U-Haul, later identified as Hamel, told deputies that he and the others were moving from Louisiana to Michigan.
Deputies said that during a search of the truck, they discovered four children and two dogs “traveling inside the enclosed bed of the U-Haul.”
“The children were taken to a hospital to be evaluated for possible heat-related injuries,” the release states. “The driver and passenger of the U-Haul were transported and released to the Livingston County Jail.”
In addition to the press release, the sheriff’s office posted an image from a deputy’s body camera showing the inside of the vehicle, which is packed with large gray plastic storage bins, laundry baskets and filled garbage bags. Clothing is strewed throughout the vehicle, and several children lie on top of various objects. The children’s faces are censored from the photo.
Hamel was also charged with one count of driving with a suspended license, the sheriff’s office said.
Authorities did not provide the children’s ages or further details about their conditions.
